This June was an interesting month for music. While it didn’t have the volume of heavyweight releases that April and May had, many notable albums came from artists including YG, Jon Bellion, Red Hot Chili Peppers, DJ Shadow, Riff Raff, Bishop Nehru, Kodak Black, Alex Wiley, Desiigner, DJ Esco, and Wale. YG’s politically-charged sophomore release Still Brazy is already one of the year’s best albums, Kodak Black’s ambitiously titled Lil B.I.G. Pac continues to cement him as a cut above most up-and-coming young trappers, and Wale may have put out one of his greatest projects ever with his mixtape Summer on Sunset.
July’s already shaping up to be an incredible month for album releases; here’s some of the most noteworthy upcoming albums:
July 1

Snoop Dogg – Coolaid
While Snoop Dogg’s previous album, last year’s Bush, was undoubtedly an interesting album – showcasing a throwback affinity for funk and featuring such artists as Stevie Wonder, Kendrick Lamar, and Charlie Wilson – it was a vast departure from the Snoop Dogg of old. Coolaid, however, sounds like it’s about to be the closest thing to Doggystyle since Doggystyle. Newer artists like Jeremih and Wiz Khalifa find their way on the album alongside such West Coast mainstays as Trick Trick, Too $hort, and E-40. Early releases such as “Point Seen Money Gone” and the Just-Blaze produced “Super Crip” find Snoop lapsing back into his weed-laced, laidback flows that catapulted him to fame in the early nineties.

ScHoolboy Q – Blank Face LP
The followup to 2014’s stellar Oxymoron finds the TDE rapper working on a whole other level. Anticipation has been building since the release of first single “Groovy Tony” (the POV video for which included Q lighting a joint off of his own burning arm), and the Kanye-assisted second single “THat Part” has been in constant rotation since it came out. Music, however, seems to be only half the experience with Blank Face, as the release of several trailers and the first two parts (“By Any Means” and “Tookie Knows II“) to what seems to be a movie about Q’s life growing up on Hoover St., indicate the importance that visuals will have with Q’s fourth album. While ScHoolboy’s fellow black hippy members (Kendrick, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock) are all surprisingly absent from the tracklist, fellow TDE artists Lance Skiiiwalker and SZA join Anderson .Paak, Vince Staples, E-40, Tha Dogg Pound, and many more for the album. For those worried about the lack of Kendrick, he’s not entirely uninvolved with the album: Cornrow Kenny has his first production credit, alongside Cardo, on the album’s penultimate track, Overtime. Other producers involved include Swizz Beatz, Sounwave, the Alchemist, and Tyler, the Creator.

The Avalanches – Wildflower
Sixteen years after their award-winning debut Since I Left You, the Australian electronic collective the Avlanches return with their much-anticipated followup Wildflower. While several songs have already been previewed (including the absolutely stellar Danny Brown and MF DOOM-assisted “Frankie Sinatra“), the album will showcase artists such as Biz Markie, Father John Misty, Toro Y Moi, and Nick Cave-collaborator Warren Ellis. Since I Left You was one of the best-reviewed albums of 2000, and is revered as one of the best Australian albums of all time. The Avlanches were praised for their incredibly dedicated usage of sampling (containing approximately 3500 samples across eighteen songs) and their boundary-pushing of the electronic and plunderphonic genres.

BADBADNOTGOOD – IV
The Toronto jazz collective, who collaborated with Ghostface Killah for last year’s Sour Soul, have returned with their fourth studio album. Unlike their first three, this album promises more highbrow features, including Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins, producer Kaytranada, and Future Island frontman Sam Herring on the single “Time Moves Slow“. The quartet, previously known for their jazz reinterpretations of everything from Saria’s Song from The Legend of Zelda games to early Odd Future songs, seem on the verge of receiving a lot more notice with this release.
July 15

Blu & Nottz – Titans in the Flesh
Underground mainstay Blu, who first made waves with his stellar debut Below The Heavens, has once again teamed up with producer Nottz (whose resume includes working with such heavyweights as Biggie, 50 Cent, and Ghostface Killah) for their followup to 2013’s Gods in the Spirit.

Dem Atlas – mF deM
Rhymesayers has always had an impressive roster of underground rappers and producers. Managing an eclectic range of artists, from Aesop Rock to Dilated Peoples to Freeway, the label has helped many artists maintain their underground sensibilities while still finding more widespread acclaim. The latest Rhymesayers release comes from Dem Atlas, one third of Sifu Hotman, with his third project, mF deM, which features production entirely consisting of unheard MF DOOM beats. If early releases like “Grbge Trsh” are any indication, this is going to be another interesting DOOM side project in the same vein as NehruvianDoom, and could help propel Dem Atlas into much-deserved acclaim.

Clams Casino – 32 Levels
The New Jersey producer, born Michael Volpe, has made a name as one of the biggest producers going with his atmospheric, heavy style of production that have made him a frequent collaborator of A$AP Rocky and had him work with such artists as Mac Miller, the Weeknd, ScHoolboy Q, FKA Twigs, Vince Staples, and Danny Brown. Not including the three instrumental albums he’s released for free through his website, 32 Levels will be the producer’s first studio album. Features include A$AP Rocky, Vince Staples (on first single “All Nite“), Lil B, Future Island’s Sam Herring, Wet’s Kelly Zutrau, and alt-j’s Joe Newman.
July 22

Gucci Mane – Everybody Looking
After more than two years in prison on firearm charges, trap god Gucci Mane was released on May 26 and, according to reports, completed upcoming album Everybody Looking in just six days. While Gucci’s album output hasn’t slowed down throughout his incarceration (due to several hard drives worth of prerecorded music and the efforts of engineer Sean Paine) this will be the first album of newly-recorded Gucci songs since 2013’s Trap House III. Post-prison releases “First Day Out Tha Feds“, “All My Children“, and the Drake-assisted “Back On Road” show Gucci rapping like no time has passed at all.
July 29

DJ Khaled – Major Key
Viral snapchat sensation DJ Khaled is capitalizing on all of the fame he’s received from his obsessive dedication to inspire the world through ten-second videos of him riding in his elevator and watering his garden by releasing his ninth studio album, Major Key. The self-proclaimed “king of anthems”, responsible for platinum singles “All I Do Is Win” and “I’m On One“, has reportedly secured artists including Big Sean, Travis Scott, and Lil Wayne, alongside Jay-Z and Future on “I Got the Keys” and Drake on “For Free“.
Other notable upcoming releases include Mallrat’s debut EP on the 1st, Lil Durk’s Lil Durk 2x on the 22nd, and producer ZHU’s debut album Generationwhy on the 29th. SaveMoney Summer also continues with the release of Brian Fresco’s third album, Casanova (featuring the Chance the Rapper-assisted summer jam “Higher“) on the 15th, and Towkio’s latest project Community Service 2 on the 7th.
