Desiigner Drops “Tiimmy Turner”

Desiigner’s “Tiimmy Turner” recently became one of the most anticipated songs of the summer, and now it’s finally here: the “Panda” rapper finally released a studio version of the track to YouTube, and it’s his best work yet.

“Tiimmy Turner” is the full version of a song the 18-year-old Brooklyn rapper premiered in his XXL Freshman Freestyle just under a month ago. The acapella freestyle found Desiigner singing about the Fairly Odd Parents protagonist finding a gun and killing everyone around him, in a haunting melody that suits Desiigner far better than the Future-inspired rap/yelling that he employed in his underwhelming debut mixtape New English.

Featuring perfect production from GOOD Music’s Mike Dean, whose signature style has made him a Kanye West favourite (see “Devil in a New Dress”, “Monster”, etc.). The lush, yet minimalist production is entirely reminiscent of MBDTF, and allows Desiigner’s deep, melodic voice to shine through.

I wrote back when New English dropped that Desiigner needed to carve his own lane instead of trying to backpack on the sounds of Future and G Herbo, and if the music on his album is anything close to “Tiimmy Turner” then he may just escape the one-hit-wonder trap. The fact that Mike Dean is executive producing the album is a good sign, so here’s hoping the veteran produer brings out the best in Kanye’s latest protégé.
