A little over a year after his debut EP, Joan Cusack, Vancouver rapper LAWK dropped his second album of 2016 on Sunday with Pink.
The followup to March’s Lonely Boy album, Pink finds LAWK working exclusively with Minnesota producer McTrilly. The two worked together on previous songs “5 Minutes”, “g2g”, and “Lonely Boy”.
LAWK’s style, which roots itself in the modern ‘cloud rap’ genre often attributed to artists such as Kitty, A$AP Rocky, and Yung Lean, finds its influences in everyone from Childish Gambino and Tyler, the Creator to Quin XCII and EDEN.
McTrilly’s atmospheric, electronic-influenced beats complement LAWK’s unconventional approach to the sing/rap style popularised by artists like Drake and Gambino. The producer’s influences range from indie rock to trap, and the beats on Pink cover a range of styles while maintaining a consistent theme. LAWK’s lyrics touch on the rapper’s struggles with depression, drugs, relationships, and disloyal friends. Both LAWK and McTrilly are young artists still trying to find their lane in the ever-expanding hip hop game, but Pink is a strong progression for both of them.
