The Divine Feminine follows last year’s excellent GO:OD AM. Mac Miller’s has worked hard to escape the frat-rap label that accompanied his early work (notably albums Best Day Ever and Blue Slide Park, and now-regrettable single “Donald Trump“). Following a destructive addiction to promethazine that led to an almost-fatal overdose, Mac Miller’s music had a distinct change into more melancholic, introspective writing and production that proved Miller to be one of the best artists in the game right now. Following an excellent album run that began with 2013’s Watching Movies with the Sound Off and continued through 2014’s Faces mixtape and 2015’s GO:OD AMThe Divine Feminine should carry on Miller’s penchant for jazz-influenced, incredibly personal work that details the rappers profound psychological struggles.
