For years, Noname’s been making a name as a go-to feature for major Chicago albums, and she always delivers an intensely lyrical, poetic verse. Today, she finally dropped her anticipated debut album Telefone.
Noname (fka Noname Gypsy, before dropping the surname in solidarity with the Roma) has been a part of the Chicago slam poetry and rap scene since 2010, but she first gained recognition on “Lost”, a standout track off Chance the Rapper’s Acid Rap.
Since then, Noname’s appeared on albums by Mick Jenkins, XVRHLDY, Kirk Knight, Donnie Trumpet, recent releases by theMind and Jamila Woods, and three recent songs with Chance the Rapper: the back-and-forth “Israel (Sparring)“, the second half of “Finish Line/Drown” (off Coloring Book), and a fun, unscheduled appearance on Chance and Lil B’s Freestyle EP. Each verse showcased a lyricism that puts her on the level of Jay Electronica or Rapsody; her calm, soft-spoken tone, introspective vibe, and carefree precision has made her an artist to watch for years now, and her debut’s been a long time coming.
Telefone’s release has been teased as far back as June 2014, and many believed that it was going to go the same was as Detox or Act II (Noname had a hand to play in those rumours herself), but a steady stream of singles released on her Soundcloud seemed to indicate that the album was, indeed, actually coming out.
Noname worked closely with artists and producers Saba, Cam O’bi, Phoelix, and engineer L10MixedIt to create Telefone. While usual collaborators Chance and Mick Jenkins are absent, a group of stellar artists were involved in the tape, including theMind, Raury, Eryn Allen Kane, Ravyn Lenae, Saba, and Smino.
