Albums to Look Forward to in August

Summer ’16 has been one to remember for hip hop, but there’s still an entire month left of Summer. Here’s some of the biggest expected releases:

August 5th

Frank Ocean – Boys Don’t Cry

Maybe? Possibly? We’ve been let down before but August 5th is seeming more and more legit. It’s rare for this much anticipation to surround an album that we’ve heard absolutely nothing from: no singles, no snippets, no album art or tracklist, not even a concrete release date. After the promised July 2015 drop came and went, many fans were let down by Frank, who’s released no real music since 2012’s Grammy-winning Channel Orange. The former Odd Future member took the rap and R&B world by storm with his honest writing and soulful crooning, and anyone who’s heard Boys Don’t Cry  (from James Blake to IAMSU!) have said it’s worth the wait.

Travis Scott – Bird in the Trap Sing McKnight

Scott’s Rodeo was one of 2015’s best releases, and a steady stream of singles released since (including the Young Thug and Quavo-assisted “Pick Up the Phone“) have kept his name in the headlines. Scott’s second album, which references R&B singer Brian McKnight in the title, is shaping up to be an incredible release. Scott’s also ambitiously announced the title of his third album, Astroworld, as he evidently shows no sign of slowing down.

Also coming: Knox Brown, The Searching; DJ Snake, Encore, 2 Chainz, Daniel Son: Necklace Don

August 12th

Atmosphere – Fishing Blues

Hip hop duo Atmosphere, consisting of rapper Slug and producer Ant, have been one of Rhymesayers’ most successful acts since their 1997 debut. Thirty albums later, the duo is still going strong, and their forthcoming Fishing Blues album is reportedly going to feature fellow Rhymesayers acts MF DOOM, Aesop Rock, and Dem Atlas.

PARTYNEXTDOOR – P3

Other acts on Drake’s OVO label never seem to do that well (see Majid Jordan, Roy Wood$, dvsn, etc.) but Mississauga singer/rapper PARTYNEXTDOOR has been growing a massive fan base. On top of announcing a collaborative album with singer Jeremih, PND also announced that his third solo album will be out on the 19th. His first single, the Drake-assisted “Come And See Me“, is a great preview for the album, and has received an excellent cover via TDE singer SZA.

Also coming: Rae Sremmurd, Sremmlife 2; Mallrat, Uninvited

August 19th

Debates of whether Watsky is a rapper or a slam poet have abounded since his debut, but his lyrical abilities are impressive nonetheless. 2014’s All I Can Do, an ode to the singer’s parents, was executive produced by a pre-fame Anderson .Paak, who’s set to appear on this year’s followup x Infinity.

Also coming: French Montana, MC4; Tory Lanez, I Told You; EDEN, i think you think too much of me

August 26th

Banks-And-Steelz-Anything-But-Words-640x640

Banks & Steelz – Anything But Words

One of the year’s most unexpected collaborations, Banks & Steelz finds Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA and Interpol frontman Paul Banks working together. The album – which is set to feature fellow Wu-Tang membere Ghostface Killah and Method Man, as well as singer Florence Welch – has been shaping up incredibly through recent singles and music videos. With the other anticipated Wu-Tang collaborative album (DOOMSTARKS, a collab between Ghostface and MF DOOM) is getting further and further into Detox territory,  Anything But Words is shaping up to be one of the year’s best releases.

Also coming: De La Soul, And The Anonymous Nobody; Glass Animals, How To Be A Human Being

This is just a handful of albums with set release dates, but this August is also expected to see albums by Mick Jenkins, Action Bronson, and many more.
