New Music Fridays: August 5th, 2016

Well, Friday is nearly over and there’s been no word on either Frank Ocean’s Boys Don’t Cry or Travis Scott’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight, further establishing that release dates mean nothing and the NY Times lies. Sate your appetite with other music released this Friday:

Bump J – The Last of the Giants

Back in 2007, Chicago rapper Bump J plead guilty to charges regarding a bank robbery that got the rapper sentenced to ten years in a federal prison. His 2006 DJ Drama-assisted mixtape Chicagorilla essentially started the entire drill subgenre, but ten years behind bars obviously stunted his career early. In preparation for his release, J released an EP on his soundcloud featuring properly mastered versions of bootleg releases. This, coupled with the release of new single”Party, Pack & Fly” – his first new music in eight years – marks the return of a Chicago legend.

DJ Snake – Encore

DJ Snake’s been behind some of the biggest bangers from the last several years, from “Turn Down For What” to “Get Low” to “Lean On“, the French producer has kept his name in the headlines despite never releasing an album. Today he finally released his debut, titled Encore. Along with previously released single “Middle“, the album includes tracks with Skrillex, Travis Scott, Quavo, Justin Bieber, and Mr. Hudson – as well as Jeremih, Young Thug, and Swizz Beatz on instant standout track “The Half”.

Giggs – Landlord

Grime rapper Giggs hasn’t dropped an album in three years, but he’s been teasing Landlord by working with some of the biggest names in grime, including Jme, Kano, and 67. Landlord has an impressive list of guest features, including CasIsDead, Donae’o, Rico Love, and Stormzy. Cop it on iTunes.

Prodigy – Untitled EP

The former Mobb Deep MC has been fairly consistent with his music since the East Coast rap duo broke up, but his new Untitled EP is his first work since 2014’s Young Rich Stonerz album with Boogz Boogetz. The five-song EP features only Mark the Beast, and is a good taste of what the rapper is working on as fans wait for his upcoming album The Hegelian Dialectic.

Slim Thug – Hogg Life, Vol. 4: American King

Houston rapper Slim Thug has released four albums in his Hogg Life series in the past year to great acclaim, and the fourth installment – released today on iTunes – features Boosie Badazz, XO, and Nikki Lacston.

2 Chainz – Daniel Son; Necklace Don

Featuring a Drake collab teased on Instagram, 2 Chainz’ new album is his third release of the year (after Felt Like Cappin and Collegrove, his joint album with Lil Wayne). 2 Chainz has been on a feature frenzy, delivering excellent verses on tracks with Jeezy, Chance the Rapper, Kanye West, and many more. Daniel Son; Necklace Don, available for free download on Datpiff, is a solid release from the College Park rapper.
