As we pass the halfway mark of August, the summer’s starting to slow down but the release of excellent music shows no signs of doing the same. Here’s a handful of the excellent records that have dropped in the last few days:
Corner Boy P – Clientele
Jet Life rapper Corner Boy P has made a handful of recent appearances on Curren$y’s 2016 Weed & Instrumentals albums, and has now returned with solo effort Clientele, which includes TY and A$AP Ant among its features. This marks the third release from Corner Boy this year, following January’s Money Neva Sleep 3 and May’s Sixteen.
DJ Paul – Mafia 4 Life
Former Three 6 Mafia member DJ Paul has returned with his second mixtape of the year, titled Mafia 4 Life. The album was produced entirely by DJ Paul (with help from TWHYXCLUSIVE), and includes features from OG Maco, Dave East, and Jon Connor and Yelawolf on standout track “Get Away” (which samples Hozier’s “Take Me to Church“). The mixtape arrives in anticipation of Paul’s upcoming Year of the Six album, expected to drop this September.
Ka – Honor Killed The Samurai
Despite starting out in the late nineties rap groups Nightbreed and Natural Elements, Brooklyn rapper Ka began rising to acclaim recently through his solo work in 2012. Last year’s Manchurian Candidate-inspired Days with Dr. Yen Lo was one of the year’s most intensely lyrical releases, and he returned this year with Honor Killed the Samurai. The title is a reference to the self-sacrificial act of seppuku, and the ten-track effort chronicles the dark stories of East Coast street life. Check out the excellent music video for “Just“, which details the cyclical nature of drug dealing.
Kur & Dave East – Born Broke, Die Rich
XXL Freshman Dave East rose to quick prominence for his old school-influenced New York rap, and attracted the like of Nas and Pusha T to appear on his 2015 mixtape Hate Me Now. Now, he’s teamed up with 21-year-old Philadelphia rapper Kur, who was recently cosigned by fellow Philly native Meek Mill. Both Kur and Dave East are known for mixing thoughtful lyrics with street rap, and the two compliment each other on the five-track EP Born Broke, Die Rich.
Nipsey Hussle – Slauson Boy 2
LA rapper Nipsey Hussle has been steadily releasing a new song every week for his “Marathon Mondays” series, and today he’s compiled those tracks (and one unreleased track) for Slauson Boy 2, a sequel to his debut mixtape from 2005. Early standout tracks are the Snoop Dogg-assisted “Question #1” and the Young Thug and Mozzy-assisted “I Do This”, and the feature-heavy album also includes Dave East, Young Dolph, Kirko Bangz, and more. Despite releasing 10 mixtapes in the past eleven years, Nipsey is only just preparing to drop his first studio album this December, along with a collaborative mixtape with YG on Halloween.
No Panty – Westside Highway Story
New York supergroup No Panty appeared out of nowhere with their debut tape Westside Highway Story. The group consists of rappers Bodega Bamz, Joell Ortiz, and Nitty Scott, MC, as well as veteran NY producer Salaam Remi. The mixtape is a perfect soundtrack for the end of summer, as the three rappers lapse between Spanish and English in celebration of their shared Puerto Rican heritage and the city that brought them up. Nitty Scott, MC stands out against Slaughterhouse member Ortiz and the emerging rapper Bamz with the crisp flow and natural storytelling abilities that’s found her working with Kendrick Lamar, Blu, and Action Bronson in the past.
Ye Ali – Private Suite
As Ye Ali continues to prepare debut album Traphouse Jodeci, the West Coast R&B singer recently dropped Private Suite, a 12-track mixtape that includes underground favourites Jazz Cartier and Lil Aaron among its features. Ali also recently released baby.daddi, a collaborative EP with producer Wes Period and Awful Records rapper Tommy Genesis.
