Frank Ocean Releases ‘Endless’

The Frank Ocean saga has been a difficult one. As release dates came and went, the Louisiana crooner/rapper delayed the followup to his debut album Channel Orange for years as fans became more and more frustrated. Finally, today brought some real news: Frank’s warehouse “livestream” project culminated in a 45-minute visual album called Endless, released today on Apple Music, with a separate project (the long-awaited album) to come sometime this weekend.

Endless consists of eighteen tracks across 45 minutes, and features Frank on vocals, piano, and guitar; help comes from a range of artists, including singing from Sampha, synths from James Blake, guitar from Alex G, orchestration from Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, and production from Arca. Frank interpolates music from the Daft Punk and Lauryn Hill, and covers both the Isley Brothers and Aaliyah.

The accompanying video carries on the theme from the video played on his website (which wasn’t a livesteam, as many thought, but was a video recorded months ago) as Frank builds a staircase from scratch. Many people have spoken on the metaphorical meanings behind this, so I won’t go into much detail, but Frank is essentially showcasing the time, patience, and careful attention necessary to creating any work of art.

As reported by Rolling Stone, this weekend should see the release of the long-awaited album that Endless seems like a kind of prelude for. The title Boys Don’t Cry, which has been teased since Frank announced his first release date back in 2015, has apparently been scrapped in favour of a new title. Rumours have been flying for a long time of who’s going to be on the album, and while we won’t really know anything until it’s released, possibly features include Lil B, Rich the Kid, Iamsu!, James Blake, and Theophilus London; many are also expecting members of Frank’s former Odd Future clique, including Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, the Creator, to make an appearance.
