‘Birds in the Trap’ Delayed Again, Mike Dean to Blame

There used to be a time when release dates meant sometime, but lately they’ve seem more like guidelines.

After the massive success of Rodeo, anticipation couldn’t be higher for GOOD Music rapper/producer Travis Scott’s sophomore LP, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight (title courtesy of Migos’ Quavo, apparently). I have at least previously announced release dates for the album in my calendar, but the most recent date of tomorrow (August 26th, 2016) seemed like the real deal; that is, until veteran producer Mike Dean took to Twitter to announce yet another delay.

Mike Dean’s been responsible for some truly amazing music, from Kanye’s “Runaway” to Desiigner’s “Tiimmy Turner”, and his name appears all over Rodeo on standout tracks like “Maria I’m Drunk” and “90210” (the latter of which recently received the Hype Williams video treatment, which is definitely worth a watch). The fact that Dean is heavily involved enough to delay the album like this is exciting news, and his perfectionism is worth the cost of waiting another week or two.

Another little gem revealed by Dean’s tweets is the fact that he must have had some significant involvement in Blond, Frank Ocean’s recent album. We’re slowly learning who was involved on what’s already becoming one of (if not the) year’s best albums; for instance, Tyler, the Creator recently took to twitter to reveal that “Pink + White” was produced by Pharrell. Very little is still known about the album, however, so hopefully we’ll soon know just how Mike Dean – and anyone else on the massive list of contributors – were involved.

Album delays for Birds are annoying, but if premiere single “Pick Up the Phone” – and recent leaks like “Coordinate (Rockstar Skinnies)“, “The Hooch“, and “Yeah Yeah” – are any indication, it’ll be worth the wait. In the meantime, Scott will be featured twice on Young Thug’s new album Jeffery, which actually will be dropping tomorrow (hopefully).
