Kevin Abstract Announces Short Film on Instagram

Teenage rapper/singer Kevin Abstract grew to massive acclaim for his 2014 album mtv1987, and for good reason: the 12-track project, which chronicles a relationship with a drug dealer and his struggles with living at home in Corpus Christi, managed to explore a completely original sound while drawing on a string of influences that includes Childish Gambino, Tyler the Creator, and Kid Cudi. Today, Abstract took to Instagram to announce that he’s releasing a film, presumably titled “Empty” (the poster provides various definitions for the word, but the word itself is scratched out).

After releasing All American Trash wish his rap collective Brockhampton, Abstract’s been working on his sophomore album American Boyfriend, due for release later this year. So far, aside from a few leaks and live recordings, the only song we’ve heard from Abstract thas’s guaranteed to appear on American Boyfriend is “Echo”, a gloriously atmospheric track about leaving home. The video for “Echo”, directed by Tyler Mitchell (who also worked on videos for Kevin’s “Hell/Heroina” and Brockhampton’s “Dirt“) perfectly captured the concept of loneliness in motion:

Kevin Abstract has been an artist to watch for a while now, as he has an ear for music that’s far beyond his years. Check out mtv1987 and All American Trash on Soundcloud now, and expect “Empty” sometime in September. Hopefully American Boyfriend follows soon after.
