Albums to Look Forward to in September

Summer seemed to end as soon as August did, but the Fall is set to bring us a host of incredible album. Here’s a preview of some of the biggest projects set to drop in the next month.

Isaiah Rashad – The Sun’s Tirade

After disappearing for a few years due to a Xanax and alcohol addiction that nearly cost him his life and his label deal, TDE’s Isaiah Rashad returned in full force in August with three new songs and the announcement of a new album. Rashad’s debut, Cilvia Demo, was a thoughtful, emotional album that explored the darkest parts of the rapper’s childhood: Rashad’s absent father, affinity for Jäger, and complicated relationships were detailed over claustrophobic beats. To date, Rashad is the only rapper on TDE to not be included in the Black Hippy collective (that may or may not be defunct anyways), but his labelmates Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and SZA appear on the album, along with Kari Faux, Syd (of the Internet/Odd Future), Hugh Augustine, and more.

Also coming: Fabolous, Summertime Shootout 2; Wax, The Cookout Chronicles

Fudge – Lady Parts

Earlier this year, Boston rapper Michael Christmas began releasing singles on his Soundcloud as “Fudge”, the name of his collaborative duo with producer Prefuse73. Michael Christmas’ What A Weird Day LP was a highlight of Fall 2015, and his recent Baggy Eyes EP continued to solidify him as one of the happiest, most adept rappers going. Prefuse 73 is one of many names taken by Scott Heren, whose nearly 2o year career has seen him working with MF DOOM, Aesop Rock, Ghostface Killah, Milo, and El-P. Early releases like “Popstar Shit” and “These Saturdays” show that this is going to be an excellent addition to Christmas’ already incredible canon.

MIA – AIM

Since the Diplo-assisted single “Paper Planes” blew up the airwaves in 2007, MIA’s been a constant feature of the hip-hop scene with a totally unique sound that mixed everything from EDM to grime to Afropop to Asian folk music. After a career that’s seen her nominated for a Mercury prize, three Grammys, and an Academy Award for her work on the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack. AIM, the rapper’s fifth album, is said to be her last (although she doesn’t plan to leave music entirely), and is set to feature Zayn Malik, Skrillex, Diplo, and Blaqstar among its feature and producers.

Also coming: Fences, To the Tall Trembling Trees; Tech N9ne, The Storm;  Harrison, Checkpoint Titanium

Die Antwoord – Mount Ninji And Da Nice Time Kid

South African rap/rave duo Die Antwoord has had a controversial career in hip-hop (mostly due to their use of racial slurs and accusations of appropriation), but their music has been some of the most original in the genre. The duo’s fourth album is set to include Sen Dog (of Cypress Hill), Burlesque dancer Dita von Teese, and actor Jack Black among its features. If debut single “Banana Brain” is any indication, Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid should outdo their mediocre recent mixtape Suck on This.

Mac Miller – The Divine Feminine

Despite an early career as simplistic frat-rap, Mac Miller’s proved himself again and again as one of the best young artists in hip hop. Albums like Watching Movies with the Sound OffFaces, and last year’s GO:OD AM solidified him as a prolific rapper capable of weaving his struggles with drug addiction into relatable, articulate raps that show off his proficiency with wordplay. The Divine Feminine is said to be an album based purely on the stages of love, something that’s shown up again and again on tracks like “Youforia” and “ROS”, as well as his jazz EP You under the name Larry Lovestein & The Velvet Revival. The album’s set to include Anderson .Paak (on excellent debut single “Dang”), Kendrick Lamar, Cee-Lo Green, and rumored girlfriend Ariana Grande (among others), along with an impressive aray of producers that includes Metro Boomin, Frank Dukes, and Boi-1da.

Also coming: AlunaGeorge, I Remember; Kool Keith, Feature Magnetic; Phantogram, Three; The Robert Glasper Experiment, ArtScience

Mick Jenkins – The Healing Component

The Water[s] and Wave[s] are undoubtedly two of the best albums to come out of the New Chicago, as Mick Jenkins has made a name for himself as a remarkable wordsmith with an ear for dark, introspective raps. While water was a metaphor for truth and information, Jenkins has stated that he “plan to get more specific [with THC], and let people know exactly what I’m talking about through different topics and different concepts for each song”. Artists including Noname, Ravyn LeNae, and the Mind are set to feature on the album, along with producers Kaytranada, BADBADNOTGOOD, and THEMpeople (who are all guaranteed to carry on Jenkins’ proclivity for a jazz/funk sound).

Ty Dolla $ign – Campaign

Ty$ has been responsible for some of the catchiest hooks in hip hop, from YG’s “Toot It & Boot It” to Kanye’s “Real Friends“, and last year’s Free TC album was a surprisingly underrated release that connected the LA rapper/singer with everyone from Kendrick Lamar to Rae Sremmurd. Campaign will be the Ty’s ninth mixtape, and will feature Future, Tish Hyman, and Ty’s incarcerated brother Big TC.
