New Music Fridays: September 2nd, 2016

Fall has already started bringing rainy weather, but it’s also bringing a ton of new music. Check out these eight new albums for the first Friday of September:

Dora & Dolly – Family Ties

Young Thug’s sisters, Dorothea (Dora) and Alexis (Dolly) Grier, first showed up on Thug’s I’m Up mixtape earlier this year on “Family“. Today, surprisingly, the two released a mixtape titled Family Ties, with Thug only showing up on one song. Aside from Unfunk, who shows up on the final track, the tape is all Dora & Dolly over production by Cassius Jay, Billboard Hitmakers, Wheezy, and more.

Fabolous – Summertime Shootout 2: The Level Up

Brooklyn rapper Fabolous released the first installment in his Summertime Shootout mixtape series last November to great acclaim. With Nicki Minaj, the Weeknd, and Bryson Tiller among its features, the tape quickly rose to the front page of Datpiff’s “Celebrated” mixtapes category with over 500k downloads. The second installment, subtitled The Level Up, includes Rihanna, Future, Wale, Lil Uzi Vert, and Tory Lanez among its many heavyweight features. It’s currently available for free download on Datpiff.

Isaiah Rashad – The Sun’s Tirade

TDE’s unsung hero Isaiah Rashad blew fans and critics away with 2014’s Cilvia Demo EP, but a Xanax and alcohol addiction led to Top Dawg backbenching him until he got clean. Two years later, the Chattanooga rapper has returned with The Sun’s Tirade, his first full album. Clocking in with 17 tracks, the record features TDE labelmates Kendrick Lamar (on the pair’s first ever collab, not counting the 2013 BET Cypher), Jay Rock, and SZA, along with Sir (who previously showed up on Jay Rock’s 90059), Zacari, Hugh Augustine, Deacon Blues, Kari Faux (who’s probably best known for her work with Childish Gambino), and Syd (of former Odd Future R&B group The Internet).

K Camp – Lyric Ave

Former XXL Freshman K Camp has been mostly quiet since his debut album, Only Way Is Up, peaked at number 20 on the Billboard charts last year. Today the Atlanta rapper returns with Lyric Ave, a six-track EP that features Slim Jxmmi (of Rae Sremmurd).

Sporting Life – Slam Dunk, Vol. 1

New York rapper/producer Sporting Life (one third of Ratking with Wiki and, formerly, Hak) has promised a series of short instrumental EPs titled Slam Dunk. The first one, consisting of three tracks plus a remix, was released today on iTunes, and showcases the East Coaster’s knack for 90s-inspired beatmaking.

Travis Scott – Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight

As numerous artists have managed to prove this year, album anticipation grows exponentially with each release date missed, to Travis Scott’s sophomore album Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight has a lot weighing on it. The 14-track album was reportedly held back by GOOD Music producer Mike Dean (who produces two tracks) due to issues with mixing. The tape was finally released today, however, and Scott is accompanied by André 3000 (on his second verse of the year), Kendrick Lamar, Kid Cudi (who raps!), 21 Savage, Bryson Tiller, Young Thug, and many more. A multitude of producers also worked on the album, including Frank Dukes, Wondagurl, Cashmere Cat, Cardo, Murda Beatz, and Boi-1da.

Wax – The Cookout Chronicles

LA rapper Wax has always skirted the line between hip hop and indie rock, with a proclivity for acoustic guitar to underscore his lyrical storytelling. The Cookout Chronicles is Wax’s third mixtape (but his first sold commercially), and features Open Mike Eagle, Jarren Benton, Sahtyre, Herbal T, G Love, and Awkafina. The mixtape, which was reportedly initially slated for a summer release, is sure to be a chill soundtrack to the last lingering days of the season.

Wretch 32 – Growing Over Life

Growing Over Life features Knox Brown (fresh off his Searching EP), Panther!, and Scottish R&B singer Emeli Sandé.
