Are We Witnessing the Return of 3stacks?

André 3000 is one of the most respected MC’s in the game, and with good reason: his contributions as half of Outkast led to the duo becoming one of the greatest acts in the history of hip hop, and despite his hermit status he’s managed to contribute incredible guest verses for artists of all kinds. From iconic verses on tracks like “Throw Some D’s“, “Walk It Out“, and “Sixteen” to odd choices like showing up on songs with Ke$ha, Capital Cities, and B.o.B, 3stacks has managed to keep up a successful solo career for the past ten years without putting out a single record of his own.

His feature appearances, which were already a rarity, slowed down considerably in the past couple of years: in 2014, he only showed up on Future’s “Benz Friendz (Whatchutola)“, and in 2015 his only appearance was on Erykah Badu’s “Hello“. After appearing on twenty tracks in the three years previous, it seemed that the already-reclusive André Benjamin was disappearing even further from the limelight; that is, until this year.

So far in 2016, we’ve already had three appearances from the Southern MC: backing vocals on Kanye’s “30 Hours”, a song to himself on Frank Ocean’s Blond with “Solo (Reprise)”, and, most recently, a verse on “the ends”, the intro to Travis Scott’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. These features also occur in conjunction with rumours of André showing up in the studio with the likes of Big Sean and Kid Cudi, as well as previously reported evidence of him working with fellow Atlanta rapper Childish Gambino. While it could simply be that André’s finding more projects that he’s interested in working on than he did in previous years, the frequency of these appearances may be the first indication of the return of 3stacks.

3000 has never turned down the possibility of him making a solo album, even confirming it in interviews with Billboard following Outkast’s 2014 reunion tour (which failed to culminate with a new album, as many expected), and Chris Rock, of all people, has seemed to be a major source of solo album rumors with pictures like these ones. Speaking of unexpected sources of information, however, Gucci Mane recently seemed to reveal some exciting news: according to his snapchat, Gucci has just finished a verse with Outkast.

“I just did a record for Outkast, I just did a record for Wayne, I just did a record for Boosie, I just did a record for Project Pat, I just did a record for E-40, all today.”

This news from Gucci could be huge. While he could easily have just been referring to Big Boi (who has a solo album and a joint project with Killer Mike on the way), or even André, as solo musicians, Gucci Mane may have just revealed that we have something even bigger than a 3000 album coming: we may have an album from the greatest rap duo in history. Since 2006’s Idlewild, André and Big Boi have only collaborated on three tracks: “Lookin For Ya” and “Royal Flush“, both cuts that didn’t make it on Big Boi’s 2010 album Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty; and the remix of “Pink Matter” off Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange.

Rumors like this show up all the time, and Gucci Mane’s snapchat isn’t exactly the best source for reliable content, but if we’re witnessing the return of not just André 3000’s music career but also the duo responsible for some of rap’s best music, then this might lead to the biggest project of the year.
