Kanye Confirms An Album With Drake, But Joint Albums Don’t Always Work Out

In an interview with Vogue, Kanye West just confirmed what many were suspecting: a joint album between himself and Drake, teased earlier via live announcements and a cryptic billboard bearing the respective OVO and GOOD Music logos:

This isn’t the only joint album Drake has lined up: producer Zaytoven confirmed in an interview with Pigeons & Planes that a joint project with Gucci Mane is in the works, tentatively titled The 6ers. All this, on top of a supposed new solo mixtape, a Views-inspired film due out soon, and the ongoing Summer 16 tour with Future is evidently keeping Drizzy busy.

Both Kanye and Gucci are surprising choices for Drake: neither is an artist that necessarily fits with the 6 god’s usual canon, and neither has worked with Drake often. Kanye has only linked up with him for three songs: “Forever”, a joint track with Lil Wayne and Eminem for a LeBron James documetary; the original version of “Pop Style” that had the Throne’s verse removed for the album; and an “All of the Lights” remix with Lil Wayne and Big Sean (technically Drake was also on the original, saying one line, in harmony with Rihanna).

Drake appeared a couple of times on Gucci’s 2009 The Cold War: Guccimerica mixtape, and was one of only three features on his first post-jail album Everybody Looking with “Back On Road“, but Drake and Gucci have none of the chemistry that’s existed with any other artist Gucci has made albums with (which includes Chief Keef, Migos, and Future).

There’s been a lot of talk about various joint albums lately, but unfortunately this kind of talk rarely produces an actual product. While a Killer Mike and Big Boi album is confirmed, and Chance the Rapper is eager to confirm the impending release of his joint EP with Childish Gambino, many joint albums never come to fruition. The Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole joint album was, honestly, never going to happen (the tentative February release date came and went without even a whisper). MF DOOM and Ghostface Killah’s joint album Doomstarks has been teased for a decade, Ab-Soul and JMSN’s Unit 6 album is three years late without a word, and you can forget Mos Def and Mannie Fresh’s OMFGOD project due to the former’s promise to retire at the end of the year. Black Thought and Danger Mouse, A$AP Rocky and Juicy J, Tyler the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt, Jay Z and Beyonce, Scarface and Nas, T.I. and Young Jeezy: all have been teased, none are (most likely) ever going to happen.

To be fair, however, many said the same thing about Collegrove, but Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz actually managed to make an album together despite Wayne’s current legal issues with Cash Money. Kanye West and Jay Z made Watch the Throne, Drake and Future made What A Time To Be Alive, Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip, Danny Brown and Black Milk, Lil B and Chance the Rapper: it’s happened before, for better or worse. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong.

In the meantime, hopefully Drake will work better with Gucci and Kanye than he did on his own, and can overcome the mediocrity of Views. A Chano and Bino album would be more than welcome (especially if Donald Glover’s is nearly entirely absent of rapping, as early sources have stated).
