This week has already seen some great releases by Ric Wilson, Rob $tone, and Sad Boy; now, check out the crop of nine excellent albums for this week’s New Music Fridays:
Blac Youngsta

Following a feature placement on Travis Scott’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight (introducing “Coordinate”), Memphis MC Blac Youngsta’s returned with his sixth mixtape (his third since signing to Yo Gotti’s CMG record label). Fuck Everybody includes production from Zaytoven and Cassius Jay, and features Young Thug, Quavo, YFN Lucci, Jacquees, and Ink.
clipping. – Splendor & Misery

Experimental hip hop group grew to massive acclaim after frontman Daveed Diggs became famous for his portrayals of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton. Splendor & Misery is the second album by the group, released through Seattle record label Sub-Pop (a division of Warner Music Group that grew famous for its representation of Seattle grunge artists Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney; clipping. remains one of the label’s few hip-hop acts). Cop the album on iTunes.
Eric Bellinger – Eric B For President

Drawing the name for his latest mixtape from an Eric B. & Rakim song, R&B singer Eric Bellinger grabbed ARoc, 11, YG-affiliate RJ, and Phil Adé for Eric B For President, the fourth mixtape by the man responsible for writing such hits as Usher’s “Lemme See” and Justin Bieber’s “Right Here”. Cop it for free on Daptiff.
Fudge – Lady Parts

‘Fudge’ is the name taken by the duo of Boston rapper Michael Christmas and producer Prefuse 73. Christmas started getting acclaim for his 2014 mixtape Is This Art?, but really blew up last year with What A Weird Day, and excellent album of catchy, uplifting tracks that managed to confront honest and brutal topics with Christmas’ trademark wit. Prefuse 73 is an interesting choice to work with the Bostonian, but a career that’s seen him collaborate with the likes of MF DOOM and Ghostface Killah promises that Lady Parts should be nothing short of excellent.
Harrison – Checkpoint Titanium

Toronto producer Harrison grew to acclaim after releasing his Colours EP last year after signing with Last Gang, a renowned Canadian label that boasts Metric, the New Pornographers, Mother Mother, and Crystal Castles among its roster. Checkpoint Titanium teams Harrison up with fellow Canadian producers Ryan Hemsworth and Seamus Hamilton, Young Guv (one of several side-projects by Fucked Up guitarist Ben Cook), singer a l l i e, and rapper Clairmont the Second on standout track “It’s Okay, I Promise” (you can check out the excellent music video here). It’s a purely Canadian affair that showcases the abilities of the talented young producer.
Jay IDK – Empty Bank

Maryland’s Jay IDK has been on the comeup for a while, but he just made his most impressive move yet: he’s premiered his first album, Empty Bank, on Forbes’ website. The album, his first since 2015’s SubTRAP, is also available for purchase on iTunes or free streaming on Soundcloud, and includes Michael Christmas, Saba, Jimi Tents, Pell, and Masego among its features.
MIA – AIM

MIA’s latest album comes somewhat bittersweet: following a prolific career that’s seen the Sri Lankan rapper team up with everyone from Jay Z to A$AP Rocky, she’s promised that AIM will be her last. Diplo, who was responsible for her the production of her breakout single “Paper Planes“, shows up again for this album, along with producers Skrillex and Blaqstarr. Former One Direction singer Zayn Malik also appears. Critics have described the album as “disparate” and “unfocused”, but MIA has called it her most postive work yet. Judge for yourself by picking the album up on iTunes.
Ras Kass – Intellectual Property

West Coast legend Ras Kass (whose work in supergroups like HRSMN and Golden State Warriors has seen him link up with Kurupt, Canibus, and Xzibit) has maintained a steady output since his last studio album, 2014’s Barmageddon 2.0. Today he returns with Intellectual Property, an albium he describes as “20 yrs in the making” and a followup to his 1996 debut Soul On Ice. Ras Kass is joined by KRS One, RZA, Bun B, AFRO, the late Sean Price, and many more on the 22-track project.
Reks – The Greatest X

Massachusetts rapper Reks is known for his stellar choice in producers, and The Greatest X, his tenth studio album, is no exception: clocking in at two discs and 35 tracks, this album pairs Reks with Black Milk, Statik Selektah, Large Professor, Alchemist, and many more.
