New Music Fridays: September 15th, 2016

The Cudi vs. Kanye feud may have everyone feel like their parents are fighting, very loudly and in public, but drown out the arguments and twitter rants with these nine excellent new albums.

AlunaGeorge – I Remember

cf8l77suuaaldjj

British electronic duo AlunaGeorge have had a prestigious career that’s seen them work with DJ Snake, Skrillex & Diplo, and Kaytranada; today they’ve released their second album, titled I Remember, that finds the duo working with rappers Pell and Dreezy, dancehall artist Popcaan, and producers Zhu and Flume.

Die Antwoord – Mount Ninji and da Nice Time Kid

die antwart

Controversial South African rave-rap duo Die Antwoord have returned with their fourth album, with the verbose title Mount Ninji and da Nice Time Kid. The 16-track album is entirely produced by DJ Hi-Tek (who has helmed all of Die Antwoord’s releases) under the pseudonym “God”, and features Cypress Hill’s Sen Dog, burlesque dancer Dita von Teese, actor Jack Black, and an anonymous six-year-old performing as Lil Tommy Terror. The album features the duo’s regular style that mixes EDM with avant-garde hip hop, lapsing between English and Afrikaans over tracks with names like “Wings on my Penis” and “Fat Faded Fuck Face”.

H.E.R. – H.E.R., Vol. 1 EP

her-volume-1

Nobody really knows who the mysterious songstress behind R&B act H.E.R. is (she’s rumored to be singer Gabi Wilson, although there’s been no clarification on this rumor), but she’s certainly attracting attention: Alicia Keys, Bryson Tiller, Pusha T, and Wyclef Jean have all spoken in her praise. Yesterday (September 15th), H.E.R. dropped their debut on Soundcloud: a seven track EP, which includes a remix of Drake’s “Jungle” (off last year’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late).

Kool Keith – Feature Magnetic

Mello Music Group rapper Kool Keith, who’s made a career out of surreal lyricism released under more aliases than MF DOOM. DOOM himself gave a rare feature for the album (on “Super Hero”), along with Bumpy Knuckles, Sadat X, Slug (of Atmosphere), Dirt Nasty (of Three Loco), Ras Kass, and many more. Feature Magnetic is Keith’s sixteenth solo studio album in a career that spans over twenty years.

Mac Miller – The Divine Feminine

Despite a career that saw him verging on frat-rap radio hits (see “Donald Trump”), Mac Miller had one of the most prolific sound shifts in rap with 2013’s Watching Movies with the Sound Off. Since then, he’s continued to prove that he’s one of the best young rappers in the game with subsequent releases. Today he’s dropped The Divine Feminine, a 10-track album that features Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, CeeLo Green, Ty Dolla $ign, Bilal, Njomza, and Miller’s new girlfriend Ariana Grande (the two have been friends for years, with their history of collaboration tracing back to Grande’s 2013 debut with “My Way”). The Divine Feminine tackles the stages of love throughout its tracks, with the title referring to Miller’s philosophy that the universe should be treated in the same way you treat a woman; the philosophy seems to be working, as Miller’s seems to be the happiest he’s been in years.

Max Wonders – Hues To Blame

19-year-old Chicago MC Max Wonders draws his name and influence from Stevie Wonder, and has returned with his second mixtape in as many years with Hues To Blame. The 15-track affair finds him working with the likes of Royce da 5’9″, Kembe X, Marco McKinnis, and Daniel Hex.

Mykki Blanco – Mykki

Cali rapper Mykki Blanco has never been one to conform to expectations, whether they be of masculinity or hip hop: their career has spread between poetry and rap as they switch between pronouns, often donning women’s clothing for photo shoots and concerts. Today, Mykki Blano released their self-titled debut studio album Mykki, featuring Jean Deaux and Jeremiah Meece.

Pablo Skywalkin – Still Rich

1200x630bf

Detroit rapper Pablo Skywalkin has been all over the news for his alleged shooting of Glo Gang rapper Rocaine back in May, as well as being named as a suspect in the murder of rapper Dex Osama. The young rapper has returned with his fourth release, a commercial mixtape titled Still Rich that features E-40 and Lil Yachty.

Usher – Hard II Love

usher-hard-2-love

Southern R&B singer Usher has had one of the biggest careers in the genre, working extensively with superstars like Jay-Z and Justin Bieber while maintaining a highly regarded solo career. Unfortunately, his latest album, Hard II Love, has gone largely unregarded due to its premier on failing streaming site Tidal. The album dropped today on iTunes, however, so hopefully it’s going to be getting some of the acclaim it deserves. Young Thug, Future, and Rubén Blades are all featured on the album, as well Indian actress Priyanka Chopra on the intro track.

Also released today: AlunaGeorge, I Remember; Cryptic One, The World According To; Kent Jones, Too Much Too Soon; The Robert Glasper Experience, ArtScience;
