Not a whole lot is known about the artist who goes by Francis Farewell Starlite, but he’s had a profound effect on music since starting out in 2007. Today, his music project Francis & The Lights released their first proper album, Farewell, Starlite!, for free streaming.

Francis’ career has spanned nearly a decade and seen the release of four EPs and a soundtrack (for Robot & Frank), but he really rose to prominence after appearing on Chance the Rapper’s “Summer Friends” off of this year’s Coloring Book album. His placement on the track took him from underground favourite to mainstream success, but early tracks like “Darling It’s Alright” and “Like A Dream” gained Francis a devoted following and well-deserved attention among fellow artists.
While many hadn’t heard of Francis until this year, he’s actually made appearances on several prominent projects throughout the years, on albums including Drake’s Take Care, Donnie Trumpet’s Surf, Das Racist’s Relax, and Frank Ocean’s recent Blond(e). The Prismizer vocal effect that he revolutionized has also begun showing up on more and more music lately, and is expected to be used by Kanye on his upcoming Turbo Grafx 16 album (unlike Autotune, a Prismizer saturates vocals in a more choir-like, voluminous effect; Wikipedia compares the process to the way light is split when it enters a prism).
Farewell, Starlite! hasn’t been released for purchase yet, and not much is known for who was involved except for Bon Iver, who provided production on “See Her Out” and vocals on “Friends“. The 10-track album doesn’t differ too much from Francis’ trademark style, but that’s a good thing: each release has perfected his signature sound (which has since been lifted by artists like Yeasayer and MGMT), and Farewell, Starlite! is his most cohesive work yet. Glitching synths, Prismizer-layered vocals, and a penchant for minimalist theatrics make this one of the year’s most listenable, yet subtly complex, releases.
