Pusha T Season Is Upon Us

Pusha T blasted onto the scene more than 15 years ago as the scene-stealing half of Clipse (with his brother, No Malice), a Neptunes-produced duo that essentially ushered in the subgenre of ‘coke rap’. No Malice effectively ended the partnership in 2014, and while his solo career has gone largely unacknowledged, Pusha T has only gotten bigger. Since taking over for Kanye as the label president of GOOD Music, Pusha also released last year’s Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude, a precursor to his upcoming King Push album.

Yesterday, Pusha returned with his first song since May’s Jay Z-assisted “Drug Dealers Anonymous“.

On the new Mike WiLL Made-It-produced banger “H.G.T.V.”, Pusha’s at his most braggadocious, claiming to have an “album of the year contender every year” and putting other wack rappers in their place. The incredible music video features Pusha T’s fashion evolving throughout his career, going from sitting behind a school desk in jeans and a baseball hat to wearing the three-piece suit befitting a label president. He also uses the song to defend his choice to sign young rapper/ad-lib aficionado Desiigner to GOOD Music:

“Oh mama, they question my starting lineup
You only find a diamond from diggin’ like coal miners
Don’t listen to ’em, Desiigner
The same rappers talkin’ next year will be Uber drivers”

Speaking of Desiigner, today saw the release of the third single from King Push: “Circles”, featuring Ty Dolla $ign on the hook, and Desiigner with constant “grrrrrrrah!” ad libs and a tasteful post-hook. For a rapper who’s often more mired in controversy over his chameleonic Future-esque style than his actual abilities as an artist, “Circles” uses Desiigner’s signature baritone expertly.

With these two back-to-back singles, as well as the excellent “Drug Dealers Anonymous”, Pusha’s ready to reclaim the spotlight and drop one of the best albums of winter ’16. Expect King Push sometime in the next couple months.
