Rich Chigga Releases ‘Dat $tick’ Remix

When teenage Indonesian vine star Brian Imanuel started a rap career under the inflammatory name of ‘Rich Chigga’, I don’t think anyone ever expected it to catch on as well as it did. But when the kid who taught you how to microwave #bread dropped the music video for his breakthrough single “Dat $tick“, everything changed.

One of the major factors that helped Rich Chigga become a household name was the video “Rappers React To Rich Chigga” by 88rising, an East Asian production company known for working with Asian rappers including Dumbfoundead and Keith Ape, as well as putting out music videos for Goldlink and Anderson .Paak. The Rappers React video found artists like Tory Lanez, Flatbush Zombies, Cam’ron, and Jazz Cartier sharing their thoughts on “Dat $tick”. The real star of the video, besides Tory Lanez’ facial expressions, was Wu-Tang’s Ghostface Killah, who ended the video by stating “I’ll get on that track”. Nobody really knew whether to expect an actual Ghostface verse over the hypnotic slide-whistle beat, but the Staten Island rapper stayed true to his word.

The “Dat $tick” remix features both Ghostface (who manages to reference both R. Kelly’s “Ignition (Remix)” and Steve Harvey’s head in a single bar) and Pouya, and underground favourite known for promoting young up-and-coming rappers like Shakewell and $uicideboy$. Props to Ghostface for making good on his promise, and props to Rich Chigga for managing to inject himself into a musical culture he doesn’t necessarily fit into by simply being good enough to attract the attention of a revered veteran.

Since he was born in Indonesia, Imanuel had to teach himself English, and he did so (reportedly) by studying rap videos on the internet. Expect more from the prolific young artist in the future, as he seems to already have surpassed the shortlived reign of most so-called “joke rappers” through a burgeoning lyrical dexterity and original sound.
