After years of being dismissed as a joke rapper, Riff Raff’s been on a crusade lately to prove himself as an artist without abandoning his signature style. As standout tracks from 2014’s Neon Icon and this year’s Peach Panther like “Lava Glaciers”, “Aquaberry Dolphin”, and “Carlos Slim” have proven, Riff has is a gifted lyricist, despite the fact that he tends to shy away from saying anything. He’s all about the wordplay and rhyme scheme, and that’s impressive in its own right.
For his second release of the year, Riff decided to soundtrack your Halloween house party with Balloween. The first track off the forthcoming mixtape is just about the most unlikely pairing you could ask for: joining Jody Highroller is none other than Grime superstar and recent Mercury Prize winner Skepta.
As current undisputed champion of London’s hip-hop/grime scene (which has gone criminally underrated in the US and Canada), Skepta’s received cosigns from Drake, Pharrell, and Kanye, and his latest release Konnichiwa is undoubtedly one of the year’s best. On “Back From The Dead”, he’s as menacing and lyrical as fans have come to expect him to be, and somehow he fits well with Riff Raff’s tales of Versace gingivitis and cars with Butterfinger interiors.
The tracklist for the album has significantly amped the anticipation for Balloween, as it announces collaborations with Quavo (of Migos), Three 6 Mafia’s DJ Paul, Lil B, Yung Lean, Gunplay; drummer Travis Barker; producers Mr. Oizo, Diplo, and Chuck Inglish; and the first Three Loco track in four years. For those who don’t know, Three Loco was a short-lived music project between Riff Raff, Andy Milonakis, and Dirt Nasty (actor Simon Rex, who you might recognize from hit movies like Scary Movie 3, Scary Movie 4, and Scary Movie 5).
Check out the playlist for yourself below, and expect Balloween on October 25th.
