When Malik ‘Phife Dawg’ Taylor passed away in March, hip hop (and the world) lost a musical visionary. As a part of A Tribe Called Quest with Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White, Phife Dawg was part of a movement that would change hip hop for generations.
Tribe broke up after releasing The Love Movement in 1998, but today (October 27), Q-Tip took to Instagram to announce that the group is releasing on November 11th, just over two weeks away.
Recorded after Tribe reunited for a Tonight Show appearance last November – to perform “Can I Kick It” in honor their debut album’s 25th anniversary – the as-yet-untitled new album will feature Busta Rhymes and Consequence, both of whom were consistent contributors to the group’s albums.
Phife only went on to release one solo album after Tribe disbanded, 2000’s Ventilation: Da LP, and while Q-Tip kept up with a solo career, he hasn’t released a project since 2008. Both Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White have remained quietly active in the music industry (the former co-produced the soundtrack to Marvel’s recent Luke Cage tv series). This new album will be the first time any of the members have worked together since The Love Component.
This news comes shortly after it was announced that Phife would be honoured by having a street named after him in his hometown of Queens: the corner of Linden Boulevard and 192nd street in St. Albans will be renamed Malik ‘Phife Dawg’ Taylor in honour of the late rapper.
R.I.P. Phife.
