Harlem rapper Charles Hamilton took to Twitter last night to announce that his major label debut album, Hamilton, Charles, was finally dropping this December.

Charles Hamilton has 181 mixtapes under his belt, according to Wikipedia, but with an music output rivaled only by Viper, there are probably plenty more that went undocumented; all this without a major label album. Hamilton started strong in 2008 with his debut Crash Landed, an excellent introduction to the Sonic the Hedgehog-obsessed rapper with singles like “Brooklyn Girls” and “Stutter” that hold up today.
After a prolific mixtape run that saw him releasing thirteen projects in 2008 (including Outside Looking, Sonic the Hamilton, and The Pink Lavalamp, his independently released debut album that remains his best project to date), Hamilton was named a 2009 XXL Freshman and signed a million dollar record deal with Interscope. A mix of frequent controversy, label issues, and the fact that Hamilton was suffering from undiagnosed bipolar disorder caused constant disagreements between Hamilton and Interscope, ultimately leading to him being dropped from the label and his proposed debut album This Perfect Life being leaked. His fall from fame was messy and unfortunate, but it’s done nothing to stop his hustle.
Hamilton signed to Turn First Records and Republic Records in 2015, and while working on his debut, he’s released 24 mixtapes in the past year through his blog, Enter the Hamilton. After a controversial history, hopefully Hamilton, Charles will reintroduce the world to one of the most promising artists from rap’s late-2000s internet era.
