On top of some exciting new singles from the like of Taylor Bennett, Denzel Curry, Big Sean, and Yo Gotti, today also featured ten new projects to get hyped for. Check them out below:
Aaron Rose – Elixir EP
Originally known as A La $ole, Aaron Rose is one of the lesser names in the East Coast’s Pro Era collective. His latest release, Elixir, is a collaborative project with producer J57 (although a couple of other producers were involved as well), and Pro Era’s Dirty Sanchez and former Odd Future rapper Domo Genesis both appear on the short, seven-track EP.
BJ the Chicago Kid – The Lost Files: Cuffing Season
Following up his excellent In My Mind album from earlier this year, R&B crooner BJ the Chicago Kid drops a quick nine-track B-Side collection with The Lost Files: Cuffing Season. The tape shows off his signature brand of funk and soul that’s perfectly suited for the romantic wintertime tradition it’s named for. BJ teamed up with some great R&B producers, including Harold Lilly and Dre & Vidal, for a pleasant followup to his Grammy-nominated sophomore album.
Gucci Mane – The Return of East Atlanta Santa
Gucci’s third post-jail album (and fifth of the year overall) is the third installment in his holiday-themed East Atlanta Santa series. The Return of East Atlanta Santa includes previously released singles “Last Time”, with Travis Scott, and “St. Brick Intro” aka the Jingle Bells remix that may just be the best original Christmas song since “Christmas In Harlem“. Bryson Tiller and Drake are also featured on the 13-track project, as well as some familiar producers from across Guwop’s discography, including Zaytoven, Southside, Metro Boomin, Murda Beatz, TM88, Mike WiLL Made-It, and more.
Injury Reserve – Floss
Arizona trio Injury Reserve, consisting of rappers Steppa J Groggs and Ritchie With A T and producer Parker Corey, made a lot of waves with their 2015 debut Live From the Dentist Office. With Floss, their sophomore album, the duo have improved a lot, exemplified in early single “Oh Shit!!!” and “All This Money”. With a sound reminiscent of the Cool Kids boom-bap revival, with a bit of crunk thrown in for good measure, Injury Reserve are a fun, fresh-sounding collective. Vic Mensa and Cakes Da Killa provide the album’s only features.
Kid Cudi – Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’
Cudi had a lot to live up to after the colossally unlisteneable Speeding Bullet 2 Heaven, but he more than made up for it with his latest project. Passion, Pain, & Demon Slayin’ seems to take the best parts Indicud, or even parts of MOTM2, for an emotional project about the many demons that have been haunting Cudi for the better part of his life. It’s a highly personal project, but since admitting himself into rehab for depression and suicidal tendencies, it only makes sense that Cudi would release a project so full of heartbreak and struggle. André 3000 provides not one but two guest appearances (including on the phenomenal “By Design”), and Travis Scott, Willow Smith, and Pharrell Williams all provide memorable contributions. Frequent production collaborators Dot Da Genius and Plain Pat produced on the album, as well as Mike Dean, Pharrell, Mike WiLL Made-It, and Cudi himself.
Little Simz – Stillness in Wonderland
British rapper Little Simz was already building buzz with her last two projects, A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons and Age 101: Drop X, but her latest project is her best to date. Stillness in Wonderland, like the Lewis Carrol-penned story it’s named after, flips its way between dreams and reality as Simz continues to detail the struggles that accompany fame; according to Simz herself, Stillness (“the biggest challenge for me to date”) is a sequel to A Curious Tale in that way. Chronixxx, Syd (of the Internet), SiR, Bibi Bourelly, and Ghetts are all featured, and buzzing producers Wondagurl and FrancisGotHeat provide some bangers for the project.
The L.O.X. – Filthy America… It’s Beautiful
The L.O.X., a Yonkers-hailing trio made up of Sheek Louch, Styles P, and Jadakiss, have took a hiatus after their 2000 sophomore album We Are the Streets before reuniting in 2013 and dropping three EPs over the course of the next couple years. Today, they’ve dropped their first full-length in sixteen years with Filthy America… It’s Beautiful. The new 12-track project is also their first release since signing to Def Jam. While features like Mobb Deep and Dyce Payne are expected collaborations for the dark, gritty rap trio, Fetty Wap and Gucci Mane make a couple of unexpected appearances.
Mozzy & Trae Tha Truth – Tapped In
Trae Tha Truth has been holding it in for Houston for over a decade, dropping eight albums, 26 mixtapes, and eleven collaborative project with groups like S.L.A.B. and Guerilla Mobb. For his latest release, he’s teamed up with Sacramento’s Mozzy, who’s been steadily growing to acclaim for his work with West Coast stars including Nipsey Hussle, YG, and E-40. Tapped In, an ambitious eighteen-track project, has some impressive features from Snoop Dogg, Jadakiss, Dave East, and more.
Skeme – Paranoia
Inglewood rapper Skeme has been steadily rising in the underground scene since dropping his first mixtape in 2007, but while he’s worked with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Game, E-40, and Casey Veggies, he’s always retained a periphery kind of fame. His latest mixtape, Paranoia, has a solitary feature from Lil Uzi Vert, and features production from Skeme himself, Don Cannon, Go Grizzly, Young God, and more.
T.I. – Us Or Else: A Letter to the System
T.I.’s Us or Else EP was an impressive, political project from the former king of Southern rap. He’s now expanded that project into Us or Else: A Letter to the System, which is unfortunately a tidal exclusive. Along with previously released collaborations with Big K.R.I.T., Quavo, Meek Mill, and Killer Mike, the new full project also includes guest appearances from B.o.B, The-Dream, Charlie Wilson, and London Jae.
Also released: Kool A.D., Paradiza Infiniti; James Lanning, Another Day Waster EP; Supa Bwe & Sunny Woodz, Issa EP;
