CeeLo Green has been one of hip hop’s biggest voices for years, from his beginnings as a key member of wildly influential Southern rap group Goodie Mob, to achieving massive crossover success as half of Gnarls Barkley, to a popular solo career that saw songs like “Fuck You”
and “Bright Lights, Big City” reaching massive mainstream success. A few years ago, Green went to court for allegedly slipping a woman ecstasy and then sleeping with her when she was inebriated. The trial was thrown out due to lack of evidence, but since-deleted tweets from the Atlanta singer stated that he didn’t believe sexual relations with an unconscious person constituted rape. He’s apologized for the abhorrent comments since then, and has been working to regain his once mighty reputation, to little avail.
When CeeLo showed up at the Grammys dressed like a Power Rangers villain, people were understandably confused.
He arrived with his skin painted gold, dressed in a gold gown, and after expressing anger at his failure to win a single award (despite not being nominated for anything), he promptly jumped in a Batmobile-esque convertible, flipped off the crowd, and left.

According to a recent article by Pigeons & Planes, Green’s Grammy appearance was the debut of a new character, Gnarly Davidson, who is supposed to be the centerpiece of Green’s upcoming album. We first heard about Gnarly when Green perpetuated a fake news story that his Samsung had exploded in his face, supposedly severely injuring the singer. Then, he debuted a new single, “Fuck Me I’m Famous“, that’s honestly incredibly catchy.
Today, CeeLo Green dropped a video for one of the strangest song choices in his career: “Jay-Z’s Girl”, a frighteningly obsessive ode to Beyoncé that’s just a rewritten version of Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl”.
CeeLo seems to have completely embraced meme culture. It’s a fairly proven formula for success at this point (see: Migos, Rae Sremmurd, etc.), but it’s a strange move for the 42-year-old performer, more than two decades into a storied career. Either he’s fully committed to this oddball character (and the child who seems to be portraying him in every music video), or CeeLo’s finally lost his damn mind. Whichever it is, I’m kind of excited to watch how this all goes down.
