Never one to shy away from a massive output of music, Future is apparently dropping his second album in a week this Friday, titled Hndrxx, and Chance the Rapper is likely to feature.
Future’s prolific mixtape run, from 2014’s Monster through 2015’s Beast Mode and 56 Nights, brought his career back from a pop-leaning direction (complete with Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber features) and into the underground trap domain that he knew so well. 2015’s DS2 cemented his position as the reigning king of modern Atlanta trap, and last year’s Purple Reign, EVOL, and the DJ Esco-helmed Project E.T. kept him fresh in the spotlight. This constant output felt a little oversaturating, however, and Future Hendrix made a remarkably intelligent career move: he took a year off, choosing to hone his craft, put some hard and constant work in, and attempt to deliver a project as consistently excellent as DS2.
The result was the featureless FUTURE, and while it may not live up to the lofty expectations of DS2 (which deserves honest consideration as a classic trap album), it’s still one of the Atlanta MC’s best projects to date. “Rent Money”, “Draco”, and “Mask Off” are already blowing up the charts, and Future’s proven that he doesn’t need EVOL‘s hooks or Purple Reign‘s atmosphere to continue making new music.
Now, according to HITS Daily Double, Future’s vying for back-to-back #1 albums, this time with a “rhythmic-leaning and radio-friendly” vibe; Future then confirmed, in a Twitter Q&A, that Hndrxx would be dropping at the end of the week. If the snippet Chance the Rapper previewed on his Instagram is any indication, we’re up for some excellent new music with some unexpected guests. Maybe Future’s out to prove that he can’t just go platinum with no features, he can go platinum twice in seven days. You can preorder the 17-track album on iTunes today.
