New Music From TDE’s Isaiah Rashad

Isaiah Rashad’s been pretty quiet since his 2014 debut Cilvia Demo, but fans were treated to a new song from the Tennessee rapper: the Cam O’bi-produced “Free Lunch”, which was released today on iTunes and Audiomack.

The track finds the Top Dawg Entertainment rapper in full form, delivering personal stories about his struggles and anxieties in his characteristically, subtly Southern style that finds him equal parts laid-back and emphatic.

Rashad’s been a bit of a hidden weapon from TDE, as he’s not a part of the acclaimed Black Hippy collective that consists of Kenrdick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and Ab-Soul. He hasn’t received anywhere near the widespread attention as any of his labelmates, but Cilvia Demo is one of the best releases on the TDE’s incredibly impressive roster. It’s an intelligent, thoughtful, personal album that digs deep into Rashad’s struggles with alcoholism, drug abuse, love, depression, and his relationship with his absent father.

While he’s close friends with TDE singer SZA (and featured her heavily on his album), the only song he’s released with any Black Hippy members is “Shot You Down“, with ScHoolboy and Jay Rock. Solitary appearances on Jay Rock’s 90059 and SZA’s Z round out Rashad’s work with his labelmates.

Top Dawg president Anthony Tiffith recently tweeted out the date September 2nd, promising a new TDE release, which may or may not be Isaiah’s long-awaited followup. The label also promised releases from Ab-Soul and SZA this year, though, so we’ll have to wait and see who’s going to be the followup to ScHoolboy’s excellent Blank Face LP
